Vienna to Salzburg The Austrian Romantic Road

Taken as a whole, Austria may be the most beautiful country on earth. Begin in Vienna, sail up the Danube on a Ferry, and then cycle through the beautiful Wauchau Valley, where you'll see castles, abbeys and medieval villages by the score along every twist and turn of the riverbank and Austria's best wineries all along the road. Cycle to the Austrian Alps and the beautiful lake country with pastoral mountain meadows and deep blue lakes reflecting alpine peaks --- a tranquil, airy place where music, wine and coffee are essential parts of each day. Come cycle with us through a land that is truly enchanted.

Day 1 - We meet in Vienna, a city full of wonderful sights and experiences. Music is the soul of the city with concerts and operas jamming the schedule. Visit the wine and coffee houses, Beethoven's home, Mozart's house, the Hofburg Imperial Palace and Marie Antoinette's childhood home: Shonbrunn Palace. This evening we will enjoy our "Get acquainted" party and Welcome Dinner.

Day 2 - We board the ferry in Vienna and sail up the Danube past medieval castles to Tulln. Here we disembark and switch to pedal power, cycling through tiny villages following a bicycle path along the Danube past fields of wild flowers, vineyards and wineries to Krems, the gateway to the legendary Wauchau valley and the finest wines of Austria.

Day 3 - Pedal lazily through the Wauchau following the wine route, visiting the wineries and sampling the wines. Explore Keunringer Castle where Richard the Lionhearted was held for ransom, the monastery at Melk and the Hohenstein castle at Maria Taferl.

Day 4 - Today is a peaceful ride passing through tiny Austrian Villages to St. Nikola, a quiet riverside village with simple country inns. After dinner take a moonlit walk along the Danube.

Day 5 - Explore the castle at Grein. Stop for a coffee and something sweet at the local konditori. Follow the bike path to Mathausen and its infamous concentration camp or go on to Enns, Austria's oldest town. Cycle to St. Florian and its Augustinian Abbey, the finest baroque building in Austria. Then ride to the Hohoenbronn Abbey, one of the chief sights of Austria, and to Steyr, home of the most beautiful town plaza in Austria. A superlative day!

Day 6 - Cycle west to the spa at Bad hall and Kremsmunster-Markt with a Benedictine abbey from 777 A.D. Then head south to the lakes region, entirely surrounded by the Austrian Alps with all their unspoiled beauty. Sail Lake Traunsee on Gisella, the same paddle steamer used by the last Austrian emperor.

Day 7 - Follow the lakeside roads, hugging the shores of Lakes Traunsee, Attersee and Mondsee. A day of stunning alpine scenery every foot of the way. Cycle slowly, make it last.

Day 8 - A pleasant day of cycling through the picturesque countryside, watching Salzburg rise slowly from the horizon. It is the city of Mozart, home of the Hohansalburg Fortress and a casino on the Monchsberg Heights. Tonight we celebrate our adventure at a gala farewell dinner.

Day 9 - Breakfast and farewell's or stay if you can. It's a wonderful city and the Bavarian Alps are only a short drive away.... or you could be in Munich in less than an hour by train.
