THE EMPERORS' PLAYGROUND - Rome to Capri

Roman Beaches and Islands - Ischia, Latium, Campania, The Bay of Naples, The Tyrrhenean Sea

"Rome the eternal, treasure house of western culture."

Beach View on the Road to Sorrento.jpg (196878 bytes)  If you think of Rome as one outsized art museum... as a city of antiquity, stuffed and on display, then the minute you set foot in this vibrant place this impression will be brutally dispelled.

Like all cities, the hustle and bustle of everyday life is much a part of them, and this city echoes the tremolos of everyday life more than most... it is great fun, as characteristic of Rome as the Coliseum... the Pantheon... the Pieta... or the Sistine Chapel.

Above the clouds on Vesuvius.jpg (61944 bytes)   Walk on the Apian Way... share a footstep with an ancient centurion... visit Tivoli, once a holiday resort for wealthy patricians...water falls, ancient temples, grottos, splendid villas, a garden that's strictly out of a fairy tale - the place has everything. You can swim on the sunny beaches of Latium... endless miles of open shoreline on the Tyrrhenean Sea... beautiful curves of white sand backed up by gently climbing cliffs.

Castle on Ischia.jpg (206251 bytes)   We sail to the Island of Ischia faithfully guarding the entrance to the Bay of Naples since long before the Greeks came to colonize the area. An island of incredible beauty and ruggedness. The hotels on the far side of the island take luggage to the hotels by mule. Explore it by bicycle or spend a day in absolute relaxation at the Poseidon Gardens where a series of twenty six thermal pools cascade from a hot spring at the top of the mountain cooling off as they descend. Or, if you prefer something more intellectual than sensual, take the ferry to Naples and explore that cities many artistic and antiquarian treasures.

Hotel Pool on Ischia.jpg (186429 bytes)   In Naples, in the morning, when the air is clear and the sun just warm enough , go up the Vomero... below is Naples with its gently curving shoreline... and farther to the left, if you have keen eyes, the ruins of Herculaneum... beyond is Pompeii and Vesuvius itself A thin wisp of smoke curling over its momentarily tranquil peak... and Sorrento, across the bay, perched high up on the cliff-side almost opposite you... in the dim distance, is the Mediterranean - center of the Earth to the pagan world... to the north of the city lies Lake Averno - legendary entrance to hell.

Poseidon Gardens Ischia.jpg (199185 bytes)   Pompeii provides a glimpse of how a provincial Roman city really lived.  It even has political posters on the walls of buildings just as they were almost 2000 years ago.

Take a hike to the cause of all this death and destruction... Vesuvius itself. Here you can see what an active volcano looks like.

Cyclists Touring Pompeii w Guide.jpg (203417 bytes)   From Castellammare to Sorrento the road curves precipitously down onto the Sorrento Plain... a vast perfumed garden on a natural terrace high above the bay - linger here for a time. Emperors, popes and kings have made Sorrento their preferred abode for more that 2500 years and one look at the view will tell you why.

On the Road to Sorrento.jpg (104187 bytes)   Capri, a pin-sized paradise, The Romans made it a favorite playground... Augustus had a villa and Tiberius made it his favorite resort and spent the latter years of his life there... fantastic grottos, soaring conical peaks... caverns... unknown ruins... and thousands of legends.

Visit the Blue Grotto early in the morning, the color is unlike anything you have ever seen... swim on Caesar's beach, near the Roman Theatre.jpg (181699 bytes) magnificent Gardens of Augustus.

A final night of celebration... on an island famous for Tiberius aberrant orgies... a sweet farewell toast to both new and old friends... different now, somehow... till next year.
