From the prestigious Loire River and its Royal chateaux, hiking via the green Sologne forest, to the famous Touraine Vineyards, you will enjoy the richness of the Loire Valley area : A rich artistic and historical heritage combined to incomparable flavours !

 

Tour Profile: This is easy walking terrain with gently rolling countryside along rivers, through forests and vineyards. Daily distances range from 12 to 18 miles (19 to 29 km).

 

Highlights:

  • Chateau Blois with its ever changing architecture as it was expanded over the centuries. Home to Catherine de Medici who ruled Europe from her tiny office, the walls lined with small drawers one of which was said to contain the poisons useful to her political career.

  • A walk through the Sologne forest.

  • Chateau Chambord, the largest of the more than 300 chateaux that were built along this splendid Loire River Valley.

  • Chateau Cheverny where you can get a look at life as it was lived in the chateaux of the valley because this family still lives there.

  • A walk through the vineyards of the Cher Valley.

  • The mushroom beds of Bourre and the vineyards of Montrichard.

  • The beautiful Chateau Chenonceaux spanning the river Cher. Home to Diane de Poitiers the mistress to King Francis the 1st. Catherine de Medici's husband.

  • Amboise with its royal chateau and Leonardo da Vinci's home.

  • The vineyards, wineries and opportunities for tastings along the way.

The Itinerary:

 

Day 1 -  Arrival in Blois

Do not forget to discover the town with its typical pedestrian streets and its chateau offering a brilliant illustration of the evolution of French architecture from the Middle Ages to the 17 century.

 

Day 2 -  Blois - Bracieux      21 km/13mi  

Departure for a walking stage through the forest to reach the pretty village Bracieux situated at the door of the Sologne area !

 

Day 3 -  Excursion to Chambord   22km/14mi

Walking excursion to the prestigious Chateau of Chambord, the widest Chateau of the Loire Valley mainly built under the king Francis the First, passing by the Forest Estate covering more than 5500 hectares. The estate is larger than all of Paris!

 

Day 4 -  Bracieux - Chitenay       19 km/12mi

Walking stage in direction of Cheverny  well known for its Chateau still inhabited by the owners and hunting traditions before proceeding to the typical and charming village of Chitenay.

 

Day 5 -  Transfer by taxi to Choussy :    Choussy - Montrichard     19km/12mi

Leaving the Sologne area through the vineyards, you will reach the Cher Valley  and the villages of Bourre and Montrichard. Overlooked by vineyards, these typical villages are sheltering incomparable underground sites : Mushroom beds installed in an old carrier where before were extracted the Bourre's "tuffeau" and where you can now discover the astonishing mushroom cultivation.

 

Day 6 -  Excursion to Chenonceaux       21 km/13mi
Following the Cher river, this excursion will bring you to Chenonceaux
, famous for its Renaissance chateau spanning the river and still steeped in memories of the famous ladies in French History : Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medicis.

 

Day 7 -  Montrichard - Amboise       22 km/14mi

Leave the Cher river to join the Loire river. You will cross the forest of Amboise before reaching the charming town of Amboise where you will have the opportunity to visit the Royal Chateau (where lived the most important Kings of France) or the Parc Leonardo Da Vinci, last home of Leonardo da Vinci sheltering an astonishing collection of models representing the fabulous inventions of this Renaissance genius.

 

Day 8 -  Amboise

End of the tour and departure after breakfast.
