The Historic Mountain Trail
A jaunt of four days around Mont Ste Odile and his sanctuary, one of the major sites of Alsace history. At the Neolithic (4500BC), the first Alsatians would build a giant surrounding wall with the flat stones of Europe. This wall was called the "pagan wall" building this impressive mass along 10 km/6.2mi. Your itinerary will take you from the picturesque city of Barr and from castle to castle in a big sandstone mountain with fantastic rocks and thick-forests of fir and leafy trees.

The Itinerary:
Day 1 - Barr Settling into the Hotel du Manoir and tour of the old town and the museum.
Day 2 - Barr to Ottrott (20km/12.5mi) Ascent to the Mont Ste Odile by the Landsberg castle and the panoramic path of the "pagan wall". Visit of the monastery and descent by the remarkable site of Ottrott castles. Day 3 - Ottrott to Le Hohwald (20km/12.5mi) Summit of Heidenkopf, castle of Kagenfels and progressive ascent to the mountain resort of Hohwald (alt 800 m) along the Birkenfels castle.
Day 4 - Le Hohwald to Barr (20km/12.5mi) Descent to the vineyard by castles of Andlau, the village of Andlau and his Romanesque abbatial Ste Richard then by the Zotzenberg and Mittelbergheim. Arrival in Barr and end of the trip. If you would like to spend the night here before departing, you can book extra nights. Or, you could take a transfer to Strasbourg.
