Vienna to Budapest -- The Hungarian Rhapsody

Austria - Slovakia - Hungary

Following the Danube Bicycle Path

This is a very diversified tour: Mystic swamplands along the majestic Danube, the Hungarian lowlands, dreamy farmer villages, and the metropolis Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. Your tour starts in the world's city of charm, Vienna. Europe's youngest EU-Capital, Bratislava invites you to make shopping tours in the picturesque old part of town. The metropolis Budapest, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe is the crowning conclusion of your journey. This tour offers a natural and cultural experience mostly away from the touristic centers. Untouched nature, hardly known art-treasures and cultural monuments are on the bike route between Vienna and Budapest closely connected to each other. You will hardly anywhere else find such a mixture of inherent natural beauty, historic sights and native traditions. You cycle in the infinite widths of the Hungarian lowlands You can also visit the famous "Arabian National Stud" in Babolina where you can fid out the secrets of traditional horse breeding. The Basilica in Esztergom is the greatest church in Hungary and accommodates many art treasures. Enjoy the friendly people and the Hungarian hospitality. The cultural highlights of this tour are of course: Vienna, the Basilica in Esztergom and the Hungarian capital Budapest.

Your route passes through three countries on wide-open plains and through small typical villages giving an insight into the Hungarian way of life – away from the tourist throngs. A quiet trip featuring local foods and wines - served simply and with great authenticity; sharing the restaurants with the locals. The music has gypsy roots... it is impossible to sit still... your feet want to fly. By day you will see castles, fortresses, a basilica and a way of life that is centuries old.

Tour profile: The tour is mostly flat with sometimes hilly terrain. Day 6 is rather hilly. You bike along the Danube-cycle-path until the city of Bratislava; in Hungary you will bicycle on country roads and side roads in and out of the cities with some traffic!

Tour Highlights:

  • The three capitals: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest

  • The Danube Flood Plain National Park

  • Archaeological Park Carnuntum

  • "Little Alfold" Protected Area

  • The Basilica in Esztergom

  • The Danube Bend

  • Arabian national stud farm in Baboina

Day 1 Vienna - Individual arrival and welcome. We meet in Vienna, a city full of wonderful sights and experiences. Music is the soul of the city with concerts and operas jamming the schedule. Visit the wine and coffee houses, Beethoven's home, Mozart's house. the Hofburg Imperial Palace and Marie Antoinette's childhood home: Schonbrunn palace. Enjoy the many talented artists entertaining on the street. Top the night off with a delicious Viennese dinner followed by a sinful local pastry.

Day 2 - Vienna - Bad Deutsch-Altenburg/surroundings

 (approx. 46 km/29 miles)

On the Danube-cycle-path you bike through the idyllic meadows along the Danube, through the national park "Donauauen", passing the castles of „Orth" and „Eckartsau" (baroque hunting castle of Prince Eugene) to Petronell-Carnuntum, the site of significant Roman excavations where you can stroll where the Romans did or to the health resort Bad Deutsch Altenburg. Then spend another night in beautiful Austria.

Day 3 - Bad Deutsch Altenburg/surroundings - Bratislava - Mosonmagyaróvár/Halaszi

(approx. 63 km/40 miles)

Still following the Danube-cycle-path you will reach the capital of Slovakia – Bratislava. A quaint old centre with a lovely pedestrian zone. A city of sidewalk cafes, coffee shops, countless restaurants, museums and colorful shops will invite you to an extended stroll.. Enjoy a glass of the local Slovakian wine... sit back and watch the people pass by. It is almost impossible to imagine that it has been over fifteen years since the "Velvet Revolution". A time when this colorful city was almost totally gray and very stark. Then bike on to the border and cross into Hungary... you have just bicycled through three countries in a single day. Now cycle  through small typical villages using the dam cycle path (gravel) and country roads to Mosonmagyarovar (don't worry, you don't have to be able to spell it to stay there!!).

Day 4 - Mosonmagyaróvár/Halaszi - Györ (approx. 45 km/28 miles)

You bike through the idyllic landscape of the "Little Alfold". Taking side roads you pass through delightful villages and arrive at the provincial capital of Györ (nice baroque city center), one of the important cities of the Hungarian lowlands with a glamorous historical city center. For a pleasant walk, the close lanes, churches and palaces of the baroque city centre are very inviting.

Day 5 - Györ - Tata (approx. 61 km/38 miles)

Today you bike through a landscape of rolling hills and reach the picturesque town of Tata, situated on two lakes located at the foot of the hill "Gerecse". A longer version of the ride leads you to the Benedictine monastery of "Pannonhalma". Don't forget to visit the Arabian National Stud in Babolna, this is a historical place of culture.

Day 6Tata - Esztergom/Sturovo  (approx. 55 km/34 miles)

Two possibilities:

1. After a short train ride (approx. 12 miles - not included) you will reach the divided city of Komarom, a border town between Hungary and Slovakia. Along the Slovakian Danube bank you bike through small farmer-villages through a flat region to Esztergom.

2, On this routing, you will leave Tata and travel over the lush forests and densely wooded hills of the „Gerecse" range. Some uphill stretches are rewarded with wonderful descents. In Esztergom (also called the Hungarian Rome) you can admire the imposing cathedral.

Day 7 - Esztergom/Sturovo - Budapest (approx. 59/69,50 km; 37/44, 31 miles)                        Return to Top

From Esztergom steep mountain slopes frame the pictorial landscape of the Danube Bend up to Szentendre island. Cross to the „Szentendre"-island by ferry.  Return by ferry again from the island and you reach the lively and unusual artist’s village of „Szentendre". In the afternoon you arrive in Budapest. If you prefer to avoid the traffic of Budapest you may go by boat (boat ride to Budapest is not included). The view on the sun deck is overwhelming.

The shorter version is to take the ship from Szentendre to Budapest.

Day 8Budapest - Vienna

Breakfast and a day to explore this magical city - Two cities really, in ancient times they were Buda and Pest facing each other across the river Danube. The architecture is amazing... coffee shops abound... sidewalk cafes are everywhere... the city market is a wonder of lace and fresh food and crafts... music floats in the air... the city seems to be in a constant state of perpetual motion. One could spend weeks here just exploring and be constantly delighted... spend extra time if you can.

Departure by scheduled bus is daily at 5 p.m. (if required and pre-booked an earlier departure at noon is available) Arrival is at approx. 8 p.m. The bus schedule is subject to change. The return is also comfortably possible by speedboat (subject to a surcharge).

If you would like more time to explore this fascinating city, you could book a hotel for a night or two.
