The Mosel Bicycle Path   Traditions and Vineyards

Following the wine route along Germany's Mosel river

A bike tour along the Mosel is not only beautiful for the wine fanciers. The Mosel with its numerous picturesque bends, vineyards, romantic wineries, medieval castles and historic cities belongs to one of the most various and most beautiful river valleys of Europe. This wine-growing area profits from the good climate. The inhabitants from the 3 countries France, Germany and Luxemburg began to cooperate a long time ago in order to establish the shipping traffic along the Mosel and to demonstrate the rest of the world to live together more peaceful. Hospitality and frankness can still be found in this area. The bike tour along the Mosel mainly leads you along the riverbank, but sometimes you have to pass a few gradients in the slightly hilly areas. If there is traffic, it’s just very few. The whole tour leads you on plain and prepared or unprepared paths or side roads. Numerous inns, mostly built in framework-style or of stone, allow relaxing and offer regional specialities and the light wine.

ITINERARY:

We begin in Trier. Here we meet the Mosel Valley and  wind through its vineyards, forests, fortresses, castles and picturesque villages. Enjoy 200 beautiful kilometers and learn about the 2000 years of history of the Mosel Valley. Taste the fruity and light wines, stroll through picturesque little villages and splendid streets of cities of world fame. Massive stone houses and graceful half timbered houses set off each other and contribute to the special charm of the region.

Route Features: The Mosel Bicycle Path is well sign posted and leads mostly along the river banks and is usually flat, apart from some slightly hilly passages. It is fully asphalted. Until Cochem we explore both banks of the Mosel, far off the traffic. You bike on bicycle and field paths with little or no traffic and almost car-free side roads. After Cochem a divided broad cycle strip runs at the side of the road. All daily stages or parts of them can also be covered by train (railway mostly runs next to the cycle path) or by boat.

1st Day: Arrival in Trier

  • You start your bike tour in Trier, the oldest city in Germany. In former times called Augusta Treverorum, that means the centre of the Roman Empire in the north of the Alps. This city is built next to the river in the middle of the vineyards. Here you can adore attractions like the amphitheatre, which once offered place for up to 20.000 visitors, the Emperors’ thermal spring, that was once one of the biggest thermal springs in the Roman empire, the Porta Nigra, the Triumphal Arc, the Basilika, the medieval city walls and much more. Even though the Romans left many testimonies you can find monuments from all eras in Trier. Trier offers also various cultural attractions. In any case you should visit a traditional winery-restaurant in the evening and try the unique Riesling, the noblest of the wine graves, and enjoy the atmosphere in the pulsating village.

2nd Day: Trier - Trittenheim/Surroundings, approx. 35 km

  • Today the way leads you on very curvaceous sections on the left and on the right side of the Mosel through former Roman settlements and winegrower-villages like Longuich, Köwerich and Leiwen. In the middle of the marvellous landscape there are many Roman landmarks that remind you that already 2000 years ago, long time before the bike was invented, this street existed. Just a few winegrower-villages away your overnight destination Trittenheim is located. Across one of the oldest bridges in the Middle-Mosel-area you can reach the other side of the river where you can visit the rest of the old ferry towers. In the vineyards above the village you can adore the Laurentius-chapel that was built in 1583 and the standing stone “Eselstratt”, a menhir and also a witness of the Megalith culture. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Mosel valley. Overnight in Trittenheim, Neumagen-Dhron or Piesport.

3rd Day:  Trittenheim/Surroundings - Zeltingen/Bernkastel-Kues, approx. 29/35 km

  •     In small bends the Mosel winds between the Eifel and Hunsrück regions. Passing the oldest winegrower village of Germany, Neumagen-Dhron, you reach Piesport where an impressive and renovated Roman winepress-facility from the 3rd century is worth visiting. Passing the winegrower villages Wintrich, Brauneberg and Mülheim you reach the famous wine place Bernkastel-Kues. We recommend an excursion to the paved market place, surrounded by framework houses. Zeltingen offers many monuments in the baroque style of the Mosel-region. Overnight in Zeltingen or in Bernkastel-Kues.

4th Day: Zeltingen/Bernkastel-Kues - Zell, approx. 36/42 km

  • Supporters of wine will really get their money worth on this hop. Numerous vineyards inveigle you to taste the regional wine. On the Mosel bike path you pass winegrower villages until you reach Enkirch, the highlight of framework style. Passing Traben-Trarbach you reach the Mosel-bend, at Zell the so-called “Zeller Hamm”. On the mountain the about 900 years old Marien-castle is enthroned. From there you can enjoy a breathtaking view. Your overnight is in Zell, which belongs with approx. 6 million of vines to the biggest winegrowing communities along the Mosel.

5th Day: Zell - Treis-Karden/Surroundings, approx. 47 km

  • Via Bullay, a former Roman settlement, you reach a highlight of the tour, the village Bremm. A gorgeous line of houses with small alleys spread along the Mosel bend and you can enjoy a view up to the steepest vineyard in Europe, the Calmont. From the top of the Calmond you can enjoy a fabulous view over the Mosel valley. Here ends the “Bremmer Hamm” and the “Cochemer Krampen”-region begins, which is significantly coined by three bends of the Mosel. Via Beilstein you reach Cochem, one of the main places in the Mosel area, famous for its’ old part of the town with an impressive fortress as well as the Reichsburg, a castle that is the synonym for German Romanticism.
Overnight in Treis-Karden or in proximity to Treis-Karden

6th Day:    Treis-Karden/Surroundings - Koblenz, approx. 50 km

  • Today the bike route leads you along the Mosel to Moselkern. From there you should make an excursion to the nearly located fairy tail castle Eltz with numerous little towers, battlements and oriels. The medieval village Kobern-Gondorf with many historic framework houses around the market Squareinvites you to rest. Between the Mosel and the steep vineyards the way leads you via Winningen to Koblenz, the destination of your bike tour. The Mosel disembogues into the Rhine in Koblenz. The first settlement of this town dates back two thousand years and Romans as well as Franks and French people left testimonies at the todays townscape. The great variety of sights make it easy to explore the past of the city. You can finish your day with an evening-stroll through the old part of the town and along the prepared Rhine-paths

7th Day:   Individual departure.                                                                                             Return to top

  • Departure after breakfast or you may decide to stay on a bit to explore this fascinating city and cruise on "Old Father Rhine" before returning to Metz or Trier or going on to your next adventure.
