The Mosel Bicycle Path   Traditions and Vineyards

CHOICE OF 6 or 8 Day Tours from METZ or TRIER to KOBLENZ (See Map)

Following the wine route along Germany's Mosel river

A bike tour along the Mosel offers everything that connoisseurs understand as a classical wine route. However, the Mosel Bicycle Path does not only let the heart of wine lovers swell, around every bend you will find a tempting landscape that radiates peace and beauty and splendid fortresses, monasteries and castles. These are the reasons for the Mosel being one of Europe’s most varied and marvellous river valleys.

ITINERARY:

We meet in either in Metz in France (only 90 km from Saarbrücken in Germany) the starting point of our 8 day Mosel tour or in Trier, the meeting point of our 6 day tour. Metz is the place where France, Luxemburg and Germany meet the Mosel valley and  wind through its vineyards, forests, fortresses, castles and picturesque villages. Enjoy 304 beautiful kilometers and learn about the 2000 years of history of the Mosel valley. Taste the fruity and light wines, stroll through picturesque little villages and splendid streets of cities of world fame. Massive stone houses and graceful half timbered houses set off each other and contribute to the special charm of the region.

Route Features: The Mosel Bicycle Path is well sign posted and leads mostly along the river banks and is usually flat, apart from some slightly hilly passages. It is fully asphalted. Until Cochem we explore both banks of the Moselle, far off the traffic. You bike on bicycle and field paths with little or no traffic and almost car-free side roads. After Cochem a divided broad cycle strip runs at the side of the road. All daily stages or parts of them can also be covered by train (railway mostly runs next to the cycle path) or by boat.

Trier, Germany’s oldest city. Trier offers, besides numerous places of interest (an amphitheatre, Porta Negra, royal thermal springs, a basilica, town walls), a very rich cultural program

4th or 2nd Day: Trier – Trittenheim/surroundings, (approx. 35 km/22 mi)

The route leads either to the left or to the right of the Mosel, along its banks, through former Roman settlements and artifacts such as Villa Rustika, Roman water pipelines, a Roman boat and Roman winepress.and through peaceful wine villages. Our destination of the day – either Trittenheim or the nearby towns of Neumagen-Dhron and Piesport are located only a few wine villages further on. You can reach the old ferry towers over one of Mosel’s oldest bridges

5th or 3rd Day: Trittenheim/surroundings – Zell (approx. 59 km/35 mi)

The Mosel meanders through narrow loops between Eifel and Hunsrück. Passing Germany’s oldest wine town, Neumagen-Dhorn, you will reach the famous wine town, Bernkastel-Kues, an old town with many half-timbered houses, its first settlements already during the Early-Stone-Age, Mosel wine museum). A short trip to the paved market place with a view over the fortress ruins of Landshut that throne majestically over the town, is really worthwhile. Continue via Traben Trarbach (an architectonic gem, city of Nouveau Art, fortress Grevenburg), on the high ridge of the vineyards fortress Marienburg stands guard.

Zell, one of the biggest wine growing towns on the Mosel, is our destination of the day.

6th or 4th Day:    Zell – Cochem approx. 37 km (approx. 37km/22mi)

Through Bullay, a former Roman settlement, you will reach a highlight of this tour, the town Bremm and the monastery ruin Stuben. The pretty houses front and hidden, narrow, curved alleys, with a view of the Calmond, Europe’s steepest vineyard, extend in a half-round along a Mosel curve. The view from the summit of the Calmond over the Mosel Valley is fantastic. Passing Beilstein and its fortress Metternich, with a reputation as Rothernurg on Mosel, you will reach Cochen founded in 1000 AD, one of the main towns of the Mosel landscape, famous for its old part of town with imposing fortress grounds and the Reichsburg. Overnight in Cochem

7th or 5th Day:   Cochem – Koblenz  (approx. 49km/30mi)

Today’s journey will take you directly to the Mosel bank past Klotten (fortress ruin Coraidelstein), Pommern and Treis-Karden (chapter church and museum) to Moselkern. A small detour to the nearby fairy-tale castle, Eltz, is really worth while – with its numerous small towers, merlons, oriels and winded walls. Pedaling past fortress Bischofstein and Hatzenport (ferry tower) as well as fortress Thurant you reach the wine-growing villages Kobern-Gondorf and Güls. The mediaeval town, Kobern-Gondorf, with its historic half-timbered buildings invites to linger. We continue between the Mosel and the steep vineyards through Winningen to Koblenz, the end point of your bike tour. The last 6 km you cycle on the edge of the Mosel to German Corner where the rivers Mosel and Rhine meet in the centre of Koblenz at the Deutscahes Eck. Principle sights to see in Koblenz are the (fortress Ehren-breitstein, Prince-Electoral castle, Moselle and Rhine promenade and the  lively "old town"). The Romans as well as the Franconians and the French left their distinct traces on today’s townscape. You can end this day and the bike tour with an evening walk through the picturesque old part of town and along the well-kept Rhein grounds. Overnight in Koblenz.

8th or 6th Day: Individual departure.

Departure after breakfast or you may decide to stay on a bit to explore this fascinating city and cruise on "Old Father Rhine" before returning to Metz or Trier or going on to your next adventure.                        Return to top
