Medieval Tuscan Trail    Southern Tuscany

Hilltop villages, renaissance towns, beautiful vineyards and the best wines in Italy

In the footsteps of the pilgrims of old, our Tuscan walking tour follows old  pilgrimage and trade routes through some of the most stunning landscapes of southern Tuscany. Your tour commences in  Pienza, an excellent example of Renaissance town planning built following the request of Pope Pius II in the 15th century. Enjoy fine views onto the famous Tuscan patchwork of brown, clay and golden wheat fields. Onwards, your journey brings you to the spa town of Bagno Vignoni through the Val d’Orcia. The journey takes you to the pretty buildings and flower-filled squares of Montalcino. Wine connoisseurs will recognize the name for the fine Brunello di Montalcino, reputed to be one of Italy’s finest wines. The Abbey of Sant’ Antimo sits at the crossroads of pilgrimage and trade roads reminding you of the rich history of the area. You follow perfect avenues lined with cypress trees into Buonconvento, where your tour ends, allowing you to either explore the town of Siena or the Monastery of Monte Oliveto di Maggiore.

Highlights:

  • Spectacular views over the Val d’Orcia

  • Unique medieval hilltop towns of Pienza, Rocca d’Orcia, Bagno Vignoni.

  • Walking through two of Italy’s most outstanding wine areas; Montepulciano and Montalcino.

Trip profile: Moderate walking trip, suitable for all ages. Walk along this old pilgrimage route, through medieval towns and breathtaking scenery along clearly marked tracks. A focus on the area’s heritage and world-famous wines.
