Famous Hilltop Villages, Thermal Spas and Italy's Best Red Wine The famous ‘Crete Senesi’, abbeys, castles and hills of vineyards are some of the ingredients of this tour. We are in the south east of Tuscany where the panorama is periodically changing: from the green of the meadows in spring, to the yellow of the wheat in summer, and the red of the leaves in autumn. Every day you will reach places or villages of historical importance, such as the abbey of Monte Oliveto, where you can visit the cloister with its famous frescos, Montalcino, where you can taste a glass of excellent wine, Sant' Antimo, which is decidedly the most beautiful Benedictine Abbey of Tuscany, probably founded by Carlo Magno, Bagno Vignoni, thermal resort since Middle Age, San Quirico d' Orcia and Pienza. In the second part of the tour you will reach Montepulciano, the most important village of the Val di Chiana. You will be able to taste its "noble wine", famous all over the world, in the historical city centre wine cellars of the 16th century. The city is a jewel of architecture with its majestic palaces, alleys and colourful buildings. Tour profile: Terrain characteristics: Paths and easy country roads, hiking altitude between 100 and 600 yds, average duration of the stages between 4 and 5 hours, positive difference in height between 0 and 500 yds. per day.
