GUIDED ORIGINAL BICYCLE TOUR SWITZERLAND

Like Cycling Through a Postcard

The Swiss Alps Lake Country

The Swiss Alpine Lake Country

The scenery is indescribable, with a postcard view every hundred yards or so. It's the very best of rural Switzerland with incredible mountain panoramas, massive glaciers, crystalline lakes, gorges, waterfalls and emerald green slopes dotted with gingerbread chalets. Cycle lakeside roads visiting castles and enjoying the view. Walk an Alpine mountain trail, go sailing, water-skiing, swimming and take a cog-railway to the tip of a mountain, where, on a good day, you can see to the black forest. We'll be cycling about twenty miles a day through easy terrain and one day is all downhill.

Tour Profile: This is rolling countryside with a few difficult climbs.  The downhill's are spectacular fun. The cycling is on bicycle paths and small quiet roads. Expect some traffic when entering the towns. The daily total mileage is kept to a shorter distance to allow plenty of time for sightseeing and the many optional activities available.

Highlights: Spectacular mountain scenery all along the way. The capital city of Berne. The castle at Thun. Standing on the top of the Niederhorn. The castle at Oberhofen. The Augustinian convent and the castle at Interloken. The cog railway ride up to the Jungfrau at 13,000 ft. altitude. The Blue Ice Palace. The clear blue mountain lakes of Thun and Brienz almost constantly at your side.

The Itinerary:

Day 1 -Berne

We meet in Berne, the capital of Switzerland, a city with UNESCO World Landmark status. Take the day to explore this beautiful city and this evening well celebrate at our gala champagne reception and "Get Acquainted" dinner.

Day 2 - Berne - Thun

Cycle along the crest of a hill overlooking a beautiful Swiss valley dotted with small villages and castles all back dropped by the mighty Alps. The ride is truly spectacular with a new postcard view of the valley and the Alps seemingly every few meters of the way. Thun is built on an island and laced with rushing streams. Stroll the main shopping street, unique in the world, along flower-bedecked terraces built on the roof of stores located on the street below. The great castle was built in 1191. Spend the night in this old town where Brahms lived.

Day 3 - Thun - Interlaken

Cycle the shoreline road of Lake Thun, lined with charming villages including Oberhofen, its castle a hodgepodge of towers and spires on the waterfront. At Beatenbucht a funicular and chairlift can whisk you to the Niederhom (6300 ft.) with an astonishing panorama. Interlaken lies between Lakes Thun and Brienz surrounded by some of Europe's noblest peaks. Visit the casino and the beautiful gardens with the famous flower clock, the former Augustinian convent (1133) and the castle. We'll spend three nights playing in one of the world's great mountain resort towns.

Day 4 - Interlaken

A day you will remember for the rest of your life! Explore the Jungfrau region with three peaks over 13,000 feet: The Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger. Travel by cog-railway through Alpine meadows and magnificently wild scenery to the Jungfraujoch at 11,333 ft, the highest railway station in Europe. A little subterranean town of its own with a lobby leading into the chill blue Ice Palace. The views are breathtaking - the mountain world of the Alps with the peak of the mighty Jungfrau seemingly an arms-length away, the far off Mitterland and beyond this, on a clear day, the Black Forest. On the return, the rail line runs below the dreaded north face of the Eiger, the most dangerous rock wall in the Alps. At Grindenwald we transfer to pedal power for a long, slow descent by bicycle to Interlaken through spectacular mountain scenery. Ifs downhill all the way

Day 5 -Interlaken

Cycle the tiny shoreline road of Lake Brienz, the cleanest lake in Switzerland. Surrounded by wild forests, cliffs and waterfalls. Brienz is delightfully situated. Some of its lovely houses date from the 17th c. Switzerland's last steam driven cogwheel train runs from here to the summit 7,700 ft. above the town. Take a relaxing ferry ride back to Interlaken or continue cycling around the north shore of the lake through tiny villages and resorts. Tonight we celebrate our mountain adventures at our grand "Farewell" dinner.

Day 6 -Interlaken

Breakfast and leisurely farewells to newfound friends.
