Cycling and Sailing - Roman Beaches & Islands

Rome - The word comes packed with paragraphs of impressions in your mind. Cycle this adventure south and follow the beaches from south of Anzio to Naples. Climb the Vomero, below which is Naple's gently curving shoreline. Beyond is Pompeii, and across the bay Sorrento perches high on a cliff. To the north lies Lake Averno, the legendary entrance to Hell. Sail to the Island of Ischia with its lavish thermal baths... climb Mt Vesuvius and see what an active volcano looks like from inside the cone... visit Capri, a tiny island paradise with fantastic grottos, unknown ruins and thousands of legends, the favorite vacation spot of Roman Emperors.

Tour Profile: The tour is cycled on a mix of roads - quiet beachside roads with little traffic and relatively flat, from Pompeii to Sorrento the roads have more traffic and the hills are frequent and challenging. You can  expect traffic when entering the towns.

Highlights: Rome with its Sistine Chapel, St. Peters, Coliseum, the Circeo National Park, the castle at Gaeta, the port of Pozzuoli, the Cave of the Sybil, the Phlegian Fields, Ischia's Poseidon Gardens, exploring inside the crater of Mt Vesuvius, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri and the Blue Grotto.

The Itinerary

Day 1 - Rome

Spend a full day sightseeing in this magical place - so full of the ancient spirits. Our hotel is within walking distance of almost everything: The Vatican with the Sistine Chapel, St. Peters, the Coliseum, the Forum and all of the other multitude of sights that are here to amaze you. This evening we'll enjoy our get-acquainted reception and a wonderful Italian welcome dinner.

Day 2 - Rome - San Felice Circeo

We transfer by private motor coach to the Circeo National Park. Here we switch to pedal power, cycling on a quiet beach-side road along the Mediterranean Sea to  San Felice Circeo. Swim off the wonderful beaches, then spend an evening in this lively resort where the elite of Roman society come to play.

Day 3 - San Felice Circeo - Gaeta

Cycle past fabulous beaches to Terracina. Enjoy its almost tropical beauty and bustling port. Follow the seaside road with spectacular views. Visit the castle at Gaeta and soak up some sun on the beautiful beaches. We'll spend the night in this graceful curve of gorgeous coastline.

Day 4 - Gaeta -  Island of Ischia

Transfer by private motor coach to the port of Pozzuoli, where Marc Antony greeted Cleopatra. Along the way we'll stop at Lake Averno, the legendary entrance to hell (want to swim?) and at Cumae, a Greek colony famous for its Cave of the Sybil, at the Phlegian Fields and at a Roman Coliseum. After lunch we sail to Ischia , a beautiful island where we'll spend two nights.

Day 5 - Island of Ischia

Explore the island by bicycle and relax in the tropical Poseidon Gardens with twenty-six natural thermal pools cascading down the mountainside. Tonight we'll dance beside a castle wall overlooking a little port with a flotilla of bobbing lights.

Day 6 - Island of Ischia  - Pompeii

We sail to Naples and go by private motor coach to Mount Vesuvius for a climb into the volcano. Then to Herculaneum for a tour and to Pompeii, where our guide will show us the forum, lavish temples and baths, patrician villas and a commercial district with walls that still carry 2,000 year old political posters.

Day 7 - Pompeii - Sorrento

Cycle to Sorrento through tiny towns with masses of flowering trees and bushes. Below lies the Sorrento Plain, seaside cliffs and sweeping views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples.

Day 8- Sorrento - Island of Capri

We take an early Hydrofoil to Capri, the Emperors' favorite playground, visit the Villa Jovis and the Blue Grotto and go swimming or water skiing at Marina Piccolo. This evening we'll celebrate our adventure at a farewell party set among spectacular scenery.

Day 9 - Island of Capri

You could return to Rome, but why not visit the beautiful Amalfi coast, just a few kilometers away.
