A bike tour along the Mosel is not only beautiful for the wine fanciers. The Mosel with its numerous picturesque bends, vineyards, romantic wineries, medieval castles and historic cities belongs to one of the most various and most beautiful river valleys of Europe. This wine-growing area profits from the good climate. The inhabitants from the 3 countries France, Germany and Luxemburg began to cooperate a long time ago in order to establish the shipping traffic along the Mosel and to demonstrate to the rest of the world that peaceful cooperation is possible internationally. This is still reflected in their openness and hospitality. Locked doors are very uncommon in Mosel Country. Numerous inns, mostly built in framework-style or of stone, allow relaxing and offer regional specialties and the light wine.
We begin in Trier. Here we meet the Mosel Valley and wind through its vineyards, forests, fortresses, castles and picturesque villages. Enjoy 200 beautiful kilometers and learn about the 2000 years of history of the Mosel Valley. Taste the fruity and light wines, stroll through picturesque little villages and splendid streets of cities of world fame. Massive stone houses and graceful half timbered houses set off each other and contribute to the special charm of the region.

The Itinerary:
Day 1 - Arrival in Trier
You start your bike tour in Trier, the oldest city in Germany. In former times called Augusta Treverorum, that means the centre of the Roman Empire in the north of the Alps. This city is built next to the river in the middle of the vineyards. Here you can admire attractions like the amphitheatre, which once offered place for up to 20.000 visitors, the Emperors' thermal spring, that was once one of the biggest thermal springs in the Roman empire, the Porta Nigra, the Triumphal Arc, the Basilica, the medieval city walls and much more. Even though the Romans left many testimonies you can find monuments from all eras in Trier. Trier offers also various cultural attractions. In any case you should visit a traditional winery-restaurant in the evening and try the unique Riesling, the noblest of the wine grapes, and enjoy the atmosphere in the pulsating village.
Day 2 - Trier - Trittenheim/Surroundings approx. 37/45 km - 22/28 mi
Today the way leads you on very curvaceous sections on the left and on the right side of the Mosel through former Roman settlements and pretty winegrower-villages like Longuich, Kowerich and Leiwen. In the middle of the marvelous landscape you will see Roman milestones that mark the 2000 years old Roman road along the Mosel. Just a few winegrower-villages away your overnight destination Trittenheim is located. The city is built on a kind of narrow peninsula in a Mosel Loop. Across one of the oldest bridges of the Middle-Mosel-area you can reach the other side of the river where you can visit the old ferry towers. In the vineyards above the village you can admire the Laurentius-chapel that was built in 1583 and the standing stone "Eselstratt", a menhir and also a witness of the Megalith culture. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Mosel valley. Overnight in Trittenheim, Neumagen-Dhron or Piesport.
Day 3 - Trittenheim/Surroundings - Zeltingen/Bernkastel-Kues approx. 20/35 km - 12/22 mi
In small bends the Mosel winds between the Eifel and Hunsruck regions. Passing the oldest winegrower village of Germany, Neumagen-Dhron, you reach Piesport where an impressive and renovated Roman winepress-facility from the 4th century is worth visiting. Passing the winegrower villages Wintrich, Brauneberg and Mulheim you reach the famous wine place Bernkastel-Kues. We recommend an excursion to the cobblestone market place surrounded by framework house and offering a splendid view of the ruined Castle Landshut above the town. In Zeltingen you can see several impressive buildings of the Mosel Country Baroque style. Overnight in Zeltingen or in Bernkastel-Kues.
Day 4 -Zeltingen/Bernkastel-Kues - Zell approx. 31/41 km - 19/26 mi
Wine lovers will particularly enjoy today's tour. Numerous lush vineyards suggest a wine tasting session in one of the traditional "Besenwirtschaften". On the Mosel bike path you pass quirky winegrower villages until you reach Enkirch, the highlight of framework style. Passing Traben-Trarbach you reach the Mosel-bend, at Zell the so-called "Zeller Hamm". On the mountain, the 900 year old Marienburg castle is enthroned above the Mosel. From there you can enjoy a breathtaking view. Your overnight is in Roman founded Zell, with approx. 6 million vines, making it one of the largest wine making communities along the Mosel.
Return to TopDay 5 - Zell - Treis-Karden/Surroundings approx. 47 km/29 mi
Via Bullay, a former Roman settlement, you reach a highlight of the tour, the village Bremm. A gorgeous line of houses situated on a curve of the river and boasts colorful town houses and narrow, hidden alleys, as well as a view of Europe's steepest vineyard, the Calmont. From the top of the Calmont you can enjoy a fabulous view over the Mosel valley. Here ends the "Bremmer Hamm" and the "Cochemer Krampen"-region begins, which the Mosel passes in three loops of the Mosel. Via Beilstein you reach Cochem, one of the main towns on Mosel and famous for its historical town centre as well as the Reichsburg, a castle that is the synonym for German Romanticism. Overnight in Treis-Karden or in proximity to Treis-Karden
Day 6 - Treis-Karden/Surroundings - Koblenz approx. 39 km - 24 mi
Today the bike route leads you along the Mosel to Moselkern. From there you should make an excursion to the nearly located fairy tail castle Eltz with numerous little towers, battlements and oriels. The medieval village Kobern-Gondorf with many historic framework houses around the market Square invites you to rest. Between the Mosel and the steep vineyards the way leads you via Winningen to Koblenz, the destination of your bike tour. The Mosel joins the Rhine here. The first settlement of this town dates back two thousand years and Romans as well as Franks and French people left their mark. The great variety of sights make it easy to explore the past of the city. You can finish your day with an evening-stroll through the old part of the town and along the prepared Rhine-paths
Day 7 - Individual departure.
Departure after breakfast or you may decide to stay on a bit to explore this fascinating city and cruise on "Old Father Rhine" before returning to Metz or Trier or going on to your next adventure.
