Travel through the deeply embanked Dordogne and Vezere rivers and their numerous chateaux that marked out this historical route.

The Dordogne.... the whole area named after this magnificent river which has been curling its way through this incredibly beautiful part of France for countless millenniums... sculpting its deep gorges and creating its high rocky plains... unique, rocky grazing lands beautiful in their remote solitude.... wild flowers clear to the horizon... countless stones placed one-by-one into mile after mile of fencing and small hollow mounds where shepherds shelter and into the farmhouses and tiny villages... sheep grazing as far as the eye can see. This is the land of truffles and foies gras. Spend nights in riverside villages and in Rocamadour.... The whole town cascading down a sheer cliff to the river below.

 

Tour Profile: The Dordogne is a strong cyclists dream. It follows the rivers Dordogne and Vezere which have cut a deep slice into the earth over time. The resulting riverside country is rolling with occasional challenging long climbs. The tour is mostly on quiet country or riverside roads but you must be prepared for some unavoidable traffic as you enter the major towns. The scenery is spectacular and well worth the effort.

Day 1 - - Arrival in Souillac

Explore by foot the architectural heritage of this city. Possibility to visit the Benedictine Monastery which was built in the XII th century by St Eloi and his sumptuous abbey.

 

Day 2 - Souillac - Rocamadour    29 km/1 mi

An itinerary along the beautiful Ouysse Valley towards Rocamadour. You'll enjoy the magnificent panoramic views offered by the Belvederes. Arrival in Rocamadour, second site of France and still an important stopping place on the Santiago De Compostelle Pilgrimage. This astoniching village has been built on a rock which offers you a view over the valley.... just fantastic. Do not miss having a short walk to the Belvederes. Dinner and overnight in Rocamadour.

 

Day 3 - Rocamadour - Gourdon     33 km/20 mi

A run through forest and hills in the Nature reserve called "The Causse du Quercy". An area of contrasts where the limestone of the Causse gives way to the fertile soils of the valleys. In Gourdon, discover French treasures such as Foie Gras and the black diamond 'truffle' mushroom: Taste and enjoy all the delicious local produce and discover the French way of life.

 

Day 4 - Gourdon - La Roque Gageac     34 km/21 mi

After the Cougnac grottos, on the way through the Dordogne Valley, discover a wild range of castles and fortified towns overlooking the river such as Domme. This village classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France will offer you a wonderful view over the valley and numerous testimonies of its feudal  architecture. Stop in La Roque Gageac, an ancient river harbor pressed to the cliff : another classified beautiful village where the Dordogne river gives the rhythm of life and a charming atmosphere

 

Day 5 - La Roque Gageac - Les Eyzies    57 km/35 mi

A magic stage along the loops of Dordogne River to discover Beynac perched on his rock, or Proumeyssac swallow hole, one of the deeper of Europe. A stage along the Dordogne river via typical small villages. Then continue to Les Eyzies, a village built on a cliff with numerous prehistorical testimonies

 

Day 6 - Les Eyzies - Sarlat    52 km/32 mi

From Les Eyzies, nicknamed "The Prehistory capital", you will enjoy the beautiful landscape until Montignac for visiting the well known Lascaux grottos. This city is also well known by gourmets for its delicious local products, such as ducks ‘foie gras’, truffles mushroom and its market where you can smell, taste and discover all these treasures.

 

Day 7 - Sarlat - Souillac    40 km/25 mi

A day ride on a former railway track transformed in long and very pleasant cycling path. Way back to Souillac along the banks of the Dordogne river overlooked by the Chateaux of Veyrignac and Fenelon a chateau from the 15th century covered with Lauzes (stone rooffing) settled in green scenery and quiete place .

 

Day 8 - Departure - Breakfast and the end of the tour.

 

Overnight Itinerary : Souillac - Rocamadour - Gourdon - La Roque Gageac - Les Eyzie - Sarlat - Souillac

EXCLUSIONS : The insurances, the transfers from and to the airport, the beverages, the lunches, items of a personal nature such as telephone and laundry. Rental bike.

 

DOSSIER: On the first day of the tour you will be given maps, road book, fact sheets and tourist information.

 

THE BICYCLES: Provision of 21-speed bikes, equipped with two saddlebags, a high visibility jacket, anti-theft device, map holder, helmet and repair kit. Adjustment by a cycling specialist.

 

IN CASE OF BREAKDOWN: We do not intervene for flat tires. However, should any breakdown occur that prevents the completion of the days journey we will make repairs on the road. A phone number will be provided. All other types of necessary repairs that do not make cycling impossible will be repaired at the hotel each night.
