On the borders of the Latin and Germanic civilizations, Alsace, a region very proud of its identity, offers astonishing cultural wealth. A great wine making region, its white wines are delicious accompanied with one of the numerous local specialties. A delight for the taste buds in the evening in the charming hotels which we shall reserve for you. Stages full of charm, with hotels of character and prestigious tables to savour and appreciate the regional food. A delight for the cyclists who will discover, as they travel along trails suitable for cycling and the numerous purpose-built cycle tracks, the villages bedecked with flowers along the wine route which is overlooked by imposing medieval castles. You will also have lots of time to visit Strasbourg and Colmar.

 Tour Profile:   A bike tour for everyone, level: Easy to medium you ride essentially on cycle tracks and sometimes on lightly trafficked side roads.

Overall this tour is a flat stretch with no difficulties. Therefore it's adapted to large public and to children aged 10 and up. Nevertheless 2 portions are kind of undulating: The itinerary is flat level from Strasbourg to Guebwiller and is undulating from Guebwiller to Strasbourg.

  • 80% of the tour is on bike paths.

  • 15% of the tour is on small roads.

The Itinerary:

Day 1 -  Strasbourg

Arrival in Strasbourg, settling into the hotel and free time to explore the town.

 

Day 2 -  Strasbourg to Osthouse             (25 km/15 mi)  

You will leave Strasbourg along the Rhone-Rhine canal which will lead you along its very pretty cycle track into the heart of the Ried.

 

Day 3 - Osthouse - Colmar  (73Km/45 mi)

You will travel through the landscapes and villages of the Alsatian Ried. which is rich in aquatic flora and fauna. Arrival in Colmar, the capital of the the wine of Alsace and the town of art, arriving by the cycle track of the channel of Colmar.

 

        OR THE ALTERNATIVE ROUTE OF TRAIN + BIKE:

Day 3 -  Osthouse - Estein ( + Train to Selestat) - Colmar  (35Km/22 mi)

 

Day 4 -  Colmar - Muchbach or Guebwiller (40 or 33km/25 or 20mi)

You have some more time to visit the art city Colmar. You drive through cycle tracks and sometimes on traffic-poor side roads and will get to Guebwiller. Still another small rise and few kilometers later, you are in the village Murbach where you will see the ruins of the oldest abbey of the Alsace

 

Day 5 -  Muchbach or Guebwiller - Kayserberg or Riquewihr or Ribeauville  (51 Km/32mi)

At the foot of the Vosges nestle the winemaking villages responsible for the reputation of the Alsatian

Grand Crus: Eguisheim, Turkheim, Kaysersberg and Riquewihr. Cycle leisurely visiting the wineries, tasting the wines,

conversing with the winemakers. Arrange to have some shipped home.

 

Day 6 -  Riquewhir to Obernai or Bar/Kays to Barr/Ribeauville to Obernai (47 km/29 mi)

Along the wine route you will discover the villages of Barr, Andlau and its abbey, Bergheim Ribeauville, Hunawihr.

 

Day 7-  Obernai to Strasbourg (37 km/23mi)

Following country roads and cycle tracks on the banks of the Bruche canal you will reach the capital of Europe: Strasbourg.  The tour ends upon arrival in Strasbourg, or book and extra night.

In Case of Breakdown - We do not intervene for flat tires. However, should any breakdown occur that prevents the completion of the days journey we will make repairs on the road. A phone number will be provided. All other types of necessary repairs that do not make cycling impossible will be repaired at the hotel each night.
