Easy Lakeside Cycling in Austria & Hungary
The Donauauen National Park - Beaches, Nature and the Largest Network of Bike Paths in Austria
The area around Lake Neusiedl is strongly influenced by the neighboring 'Puszta'. Not only the rough plains of the Puszta, but also impressive reed-belts and lovely vineyards are seen on the horizon. This is Austria's youngest UNESCO-World Heritage area- the region of Lake Neusiedl.
Explore the Pannonian lowlands around the largest steppe-lake of Central Europe. The lake is located in the south of the Danube- Metropolis Vienna. This region offers the largest, aligned bike-path net in Austria. Here you will find a national park, where more then 250 different types of birds are living. Vacation in the national park. "Lake Neusiedl" signifies "Puszta-Romance", a mild climate until late fall, well equipped bike-paths in a picturesque landscape with its manifold wild life, flora and numerous bathing and leisure facilities. You will find plenty of wine-producing villages around the lake, imposing castles and the historical, Hungarian city of Sopron with its beautiful medieval city-center.

Tour Profile:
You will cycle mainly on well equipped bike-paths. All paths are paved or graveled. The region is mostly flat, only few uphill stretches - on the Hungarian side. All bike routes can be planned individually.
Accommodations:

Day 1 - Podersdorf
Individual Arrival. Take a walk through the beautiful park!
Free Parking in front of the hotel available. Check-In, bike-hand-over.
Day 2 - Round Trip on the Lake Neusiedl Bike-Path (approx. 47 km / 29 mi)
World-famous wines grow on the soft hills around the lake. You bike along the north bank of the lake, through picturesque villages and small towns until you reach Rust, the city of the storks and Purbach along the north shore of the lake. Enjoy the afternoon sun while you cross the lake with a ferry boat.
Day 3 - Wine- and Culture-Bike-Path (approx. 43 km / 27 mi)
The wines from this region are very delicious, don't miss tasting the one or other wine along today's bike-tour. During your ride through the vineyards and small hills today you can enjoy the wonderful view over the region and the lake. The castle "Schloss Halbturn" is the most important baroque-building in all of ,,Burgenland".
Day 4 - Lacken Bike-Path (approx. 50 km / 31 mi)
"Lacken" - (the Little Lakes) are well worth visiting. Most of them are less that 50 cm in depth, partly with salt water. These "Lacken" are the reason for the wide variety of Flora in this region. You will pass by swamps, reed-fields and vineyards, where the grapes for the local wines, known worldwide, are growing. Today you will bike through untouched nature - when you watch carefully you will see a lot of animals. Don't miss the endangered Przewalsky horses.
Day 5 - Rest Day
A day to relax Enjoy the lake with its numerous possibilities. The lake is a paradise for enjoying the sun and the water. You can go sailing or windsurfing. Or relax in the spa-area of your hotel.
Day 6 - Sopron/Hungary (approx. 60 km / 37 mi)
Take the ferry on the other side of the lake. From the festival town of Morbisch (famous Austrian summer festival) you reach the Hungarian town of Sopron. The historical city center with its lively streets and medieval buildings will fascinate you.
Day 7 - Cherry-blossom-bikepath (approx. 40 km / 25 mi)
Start today's journey with a ferry ride to the other side of the lake, long the way you will pass the romantic vineyards and thousands of cherry-trees (bloom in spring). Wonderful views over the lake and the Hungarian lowland will make you forget the few little uphill stretches of today's bike-tour. Return by ferry back to Podersdorf.
Day 8 - Podersdorf
Relaxed from a wonderful week you can start your journey back home. If you do have some extra-time - what about an extension stay in Vienna? By bus or train you can reach Vienna within approx 1 hour.
