Bavaria's Romantic Road and

Bavarian Lakes

The Romantic Road & Bavarian Lakes

Cycling the scenic Roman Via Claudia Augusta

Fairy Tale Bavarian Castles, Roman Ruins and Alpine Scenes

A Dream Journey Following the Old Roman Road

Glittering Water Worlds.
When it comes to the area of the Bavarian lakes – the Upper Bavarian alpine upland – many cyclists think happily of pastures and lakes, traditions and leather trousers, beer and liver dumplings.  And you will not be disappointed! Lovely landscapes and ringing cowbells, lush meadows and romantic alpine cabins, Baroque churches and deep blue lakes – all this is waiting for you on this beautiful round trip. The Fugger city of Augsburg, Rococo, King Ludwig’s castles, and the traces of the Romans along the Via Claudia Augusta make you feel like cycling through times long past.

VIA CLAUDIA AUGUSTA: Almost 2000 years ago this road was built by the Romans; the only imperial state pathway across the Alps. Carts that we still smile at and admire today, inns, settlements and graves, which enrich our landscape with monuments in the ground. The traces are not always immediately recognizable, on some parts of the way, where the original road is still visible as a dam in a field and a meadow or as curved path traces.

ROMANTIC PATHWAY: No citizen in the Middle Ages would have probably thought that this road would become one of the most important holiday pathways in the future. The old trade route retained its historic image and its romantic atmosphere throughout the ages. The Episcopal and the royal residence and the fairytale Bavarian castles provide a frame for a relaxing bike tour.

Tour Profile: You will ride your bike on many cycle paths and side roads with little traffic. On the first three stages, you will need to cycle some climbs. Mostly, the roads are paved. However, some longer sections are on gravel paths. From Füssen to Augsburg, along the river Lech, you will find yourself mainly on flat terrain.

The Itinerary:

Day 1 - Individual arrival in Augsberg

Arrival in Augsberg. Issue of the rental bikes and tour information at your hotel.

Day 2 - Augsburg – Lake Wörthsee            approx. 65 km/40 mi.

Tour information and bike fitting. Your first stage will take you through lush meadows and unspoilt Bavarian towns to Lake Ammersee. Cozy restaurants with sunny terraces and shady gardens on the lakeside invite you to stay and take a rest. Then you will continue your tour to Lake Wörthsee, which only needs the first spring sunbeams to warm up quickly.

Day 3 -Lake Wörthsee – Murnau            approx. 60 km/37 mi.

On the third day, you will pedal directly along Lake Wörthsee and Lake Pilsensee to the monastery of Andech. You will ride your bike through Pfaffenwinkel and past unspoilt Bavarian towns – the monks of the twelve surrounding monasteries contributed to the appearance of these places. Bathing facilities can be found at Lake Ammersee, but also at Lake Staffelsee and Lake Riegsee in Murnau.

Day 4 - Murnau – Füssen/Schwangau          approx. 60 km/37 mi.

Today, you will find magnificent grasslands and alpine romantic on your way to Füssen/Schwangau. On your way, you will be able to visit the world famous church Wieskirche – the epitome of Bavarian Rococo

Day 5 - Füssen/Schwangau – Schongau           approx. 50 km/31 mi.

We recommend visiting King Ludwig’s fairytale castles in Königswinkel – Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein – and the excavated Roman thermal bath at the valley station of mount Tegelberg. Via Steingaden and Peiting, you will cycle along the scenic Via Claudia Augusta to Schongau.

Day 6 -Schongau  - Landsberg/Lech   approx. 35 km/22 mi

Schongau, a former Bavarian frontier forth with fortified passages on the city wall, testifies to the past. The splendid view of the Lech Valley promises greatness. The cities Altenstadt (Roman basilica with vaults), Hochenfurch, Epfach (the Roman Abodiacum, Roman museum), and Vilgertshofen (Baroque pilgrimage church) are worth seeing before you get to Landsberg.

Day 7 - Landsberg/Lech – Augsburg         approx. 45 km/28 mi.

You should see the mediaeval city centre of Landsberg/Lech - embedded in a wild-romantic river bed of the river with the same name - the historic town hall and  the Gothic Bavarian gate. Through Kaufering am Lech to Konigsbrunn (with the 11 km long, best preserved part of the Via Claudia), into the old Bavarian duke city of Friedberg and on to the Fugger city of Augsburg with the famous Fuggerei (trading company of the Fugger family and an old part of Augsburg) from the year 1516. Numerous historic monuments from all epochs give the city its distinctive tone, e.g. Elias Holls (town hall). The Roman museum is worth seeing.
