From Salzburg, home-town of Mozart, you start an unique bike tour through the famous Salzkammergut  with  its pristine  blue  lakes  and   enchanting nature.  Continuing you tour, you reach the Danube Valley with romantic castles, cozy villages, vineyards and a well prepared bike path along the majestic Danube. The unforgettable ending of your tour is the Austrian capital, Vienna with its countless sights to visit.

 

Tour Profile:  Mostly flat with some hilly stretches in the Salzkammergut, completely flat in the Danube Valley.

The Itinerary:

 

Day 1 - Salzburg

Independent arrival to Salzburg, a city of music and Mozart as well as the Hohansalburg Fortress and the casino on the Monchsberg Heights. Use the extra time for a walk through the picturesque old part of this fascinating town.

 

Day 2 - Salzburg - Attersee   (approx. 60 km/37 miles by bike)

Along an old railroad track you bike to the lake Mondsee and soon  reach the soft hills of the area around lake Attersee, which is the most  favoured recreation area for locals and visitors alike. This lake is one of the largest lakes of the Salzkammergut and famous for summer holidays.

 

Day 3 - Attersee - Traunsee   (approx 55 km/34 + train or ship

Leaving the Attersee, you'll pass the romantic valley Weissenbachtal to reach the banks of lake Traunsee. You continue to Ebensee, where the ship awaits you. Enjoy the beautiful panorama.

 

Day 4 -Traunsee - Linz   (approx. 31 km/18 miles by bike, train to Linz)

The cycle stretch leads you through the villages of Laakirchen and Steyremuhl to Lambach, from here you take the train to Linz, the capital of Upper Austria and the "Culture Capital of Europe" in 2009.

 

 Day 5 - Linz - Region Grein   (approx. 60 km/38 miles by bike)

Enjoy a visit of the monastery of St. Florian and of Enns, Austria's oldest city. Your today's destination is the romantic baroque village of Grein with the oldest theater in Austria.

Day 6- Region Grein - Wachau   (approx. 66 km/41 miles by bike)

Passing the regions of Strudengau and Nibelungengau, your reach the famous Wachau, recently nominated as a UNESCO World Culture Heritage. Visit the unique Benedictine monastery of Melk or try the local wine at one of the "Heurigen" (typical Austrian wine taverns).

 

Day 7 - Wachau-Tulln-Vienna (approx. 65 km/40 miles by bike, + train))

Enjoy the bike tour through such impressive villages as Weissenkirchen and Dumstein. Passing the medieval town of Krems, you can also visit the the impressive Benedictine Monastery of Gottweig, you reach Tulln.  Train transfer to Vienna, a city full of wonderful sights and experiences. Music is the soul of the city with concerts and operas jamming the schedule. Visit the wine and coffee houses, Beethoven's home, Mozart's house, the Hofburg Imperial Palace and Marie Antoinette's childhood home: Shonbrunn Palace. The wondrous capital of Austria with countless sights and a unique atmosphere. 

 

Day 8 - Vienna

Individual departure or extension of stay.... Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia is only 30 miles away and well worth the trip.

DOSSIER - On the first day of the tour you will be given maps, road book, fact sheets and tourist information.

 

GENERAL INFORMATION: This bike tour is unescorted. The mileages are distances of the recommended routes. In Austria it is mandatory for children under 12 years old wear a helmet when on a bike.

 

IN CASE OF BREAKDOWN - We do not intervene for flat tires. However, should any breakdown occur that prevents the completion of the days journey we will make repairs on the road. A phone number will be provided. All other types of necessary repairs that do not make cycling impossible will be repaired at the hotel each night.
