GUIDED ORIGINAL BICYCLE TOUR AUSTRALIA

Cycling South Australia

An Adventure for Your Senses

South Australia    D

The Barossa Valley Wine Trail, Kangaroo Island

Explore Adelaide's leafy streets... play Two-up at the casino... cycle north through the Barossa Valley, Australia's premier wine district... enjoy a barby, with prawns a big as your hand... visit an old whaling port on Encounter Bay... sail to Kangaroo Island in the Southern Ocean and play among hundred of sea lions at Seal Beach... ride to the Fauna Reserve for a look at kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, dingos, koalas and emus... walk vast empty beaches at sunset over a crimson sea... coax a wallaby to your hand. The spirit is wonder. Everything is fresh and new - an adventure for the senses!

Tour Profile: This is a cycling adventure. The terrain is sometimes difficult. The countryside is rolling with a few very steep climbs that most cyclists prefer to walk up. It is mostly on quiet country roads but a few short sections are not paved. Expect some traffic when entering towns. The tour is scheduled in what is the fall season in South Australia but it still can be very hot (in the 90 degree f. range) some years. It is a long distance between towns and hotels in South Australia so some of the hotels are rather plain and not up to the usual accommodation standards on WorldVentures tours. They are all managed by very friendly hosts and are well kept but  sometimes basic. They all have a bathroom within the room. The nature experiences, unusual wildlife, and incredible seaside views all make up for the lack of luxury accommodations in our view. It is one of our favorite tours.

Highlights:

The wildlife  -  wombats, kangaroos, sea lions, cockatoos by the thousands, wallabies, koalas, eagles and more, Adelaide and its casino, The Barrossa Valley Wine Route, the Eden Valley Wine Route, McLaren Vale wineries, The Wirrina tourist complex, Seal Beach and the Flinders Chase National Park on Kangaroo Island, crossing the Backstairs Passage on the ferry Philanderer to Kangaroo Island in the Southern Ocean. Most of all just meeting the Aussies - the most fun loving people on earth.

The Itinerary:

Day 1 -  Adelaide

Explore Adelaide. Stroll its beautiful riverfront parkway. Visit its casino, its arts-center and the test match cricket oval. This evening we'll enjoy our festive "Get Acquainted" reception and dinner featuring the wonderful South Australian wines and beers.

Day 2 -  Adelaide -  Angaston

Bicycle the beautiful Barossa Valley. Australia's premier wine district. We'll visit the wineries, taste the wines and spend time with the winemakers discussing their art. Follow the Barossa Wine Route through the vineyards that produce reds, whites, ports, brandies, sherries and champagnes that are among the world's best.

Day 3 -  Angaston - Hahndorf

Cycle the scenic Eden Valley following the picturesque Wine Route, stop at the Herfaig gum tree that once housed a family. You can fill your water bottle from their old hand pump. Visit the Mohair Farm with its angoras and cashmeres, often seen with their kids. Explore the small riverside towns along the way and arrive in Hahndorf; a beautiful historic village of pubs, shops and restaurants. A perfect place to spend a quiet night.

Day 4 -  Hahndorf - Christie's Beach

We leave the Onkaparinga Valley and cross the hilly range to the Gulf of St. Vincent. Cycle along the Onkaparinga river through cool shaded forestland to the sea at Christie's Beach with long sandy beaches protected by an offshore reef. Perfect for swimming followed by a wonderful seafood dinner.

Day 5 -  Christie's Beach - Wirina

Cycle south along the coast with spectacular sea views, over farmlands crammed with almond orchards, vineyards and wineries to McLaren Vale... the southern wine district, a pleasant, sunny country where wooded hills, orchards and vineyards are never far from St. Vincents Gulf. Your destination - the Wirina tourist complex, a seaside resort with golf, swimming, tennis, a marina and a spectacular view of the Fleurieu peninsula clear to Rapid Bay.

Day 6 - Wirina - Kangaroo Island

Cycle roads lined with Norfolk Pine to Cape Jervis. Here we board the ferry "Philanderer" and cross Backstairs Passage to Kangaroo Island 16 km offshore in the Southern Ocean. Visit Seal Beach and walk among a colony of Sea Lions just a few yards away. We'll visit Flinders Chase National Park and pet the wallabies, see the kangaroos, look for koalas, eagles and wild orchids. See the amazing "Amazing Rocks" and spend the night at a fishing resort on the Southern Ocean whose waves sweep in from Antarctica.

Day 7 - Kangaroo Island - Victor Harbor

After a leisurely breakfast we ferry back to the mainland. Cycle the ridge of the Fleurieu peninsula with spectacular sea-views all the way to Victor Harbor, now the largest resort on the south coast of Encounter Bay. It was once a whaling port. Spend the night in this beautiful, fun-filled seaside resort. We'll celebrate our "Farewell" dinner in a cozy harbor restaurant known for its luscious seafood and its spectacular view of the bay.
