AUSTRIA - The Danube River Heights  Trekking the High Road

An absolute jewel for trekkers is the Danube River Heights trekking route in Upper Austrian’s Danube valley. Shady forests, meadows in bloom, and vividly murmuring brooks are your constant companions on this walking tour.

ITINERARY:

Day 1 - Arrival in Passau

Hand out of the travel documents

Day 2 - Passau – Neustift/ Niederranna, (approx. 5hrs/15 kms/9.3mi  plus 15km/9.3mi boat trip)

After breakfast you walk through the old quarter of Passau to the ship station. Then you take the ship to Engelhartszell. Your hiking tour starts at the Danube ferry station.

The path proceeds along the “Frauensteig” to the lookout “Penzenstein” (enjoy the view over the beautiful Danube valley). Your stop today: Neustift.

Day 3 - Neustift/ Niederranna – Schlögen/ St. Agatha, (approx. 7.5hrs/22 kms/13.6mi)

The hiking path brings you through forests and meadows and pass the lookout “Pühretstein” and the castle “Rannariedl” on your way down to the Danube. After crossing the river by ferry you hike through the peaceful “Kößlbachtal” to the “Schlögener Schlinge” (this is a famous section of the Danube, where the river flows backwards in a meander)

Day 4 - Schlögen/ St. Agatha – Ober-/Untermühl, (approx. 7.5hrs/22 kms/13.6mi)

Firstly you make a short tour around the lookout “Schlögener Blick” (where you can have a great view to the “Schlögener-Schlinge”). After hiking to Kobling you cross the Danube by ferry and walk to “Ober-/ Untermühl.

Day 5 - Day for recreation

Today’s highlight is the game park Altenfelden (nature reserve with nearly 700 animals)or through the valley of the river Muhl.. Overnight stay at the same hotel as yesterday.

Day 6 - Ober-/Untermühl – Rodl/Ottensheim, (approx. 5hrs/14 kms/8.7mi plus 12km/7mi bus ride)

Hiking tour to Neuhaus Castle and to the wild, romantic nature reserve “Pesenbachtal”. Bus ride from Bad Mühllacken to Rodl/Ottensheim.

Day 7  - Rodl/Ottensheim – Linz, (approx. 5hrs/14 kms/8.7mi)

Passing the castle of Ottensheim you walk to the “Pöstlingberg” (one of the most famous sights of Linz where you can have a marvellous view over the city). It is possible to go down the hill by the steepest adhesion train of Europe. Linz is a city with cultural highlights that wait be explored

Our Tip: Book an extra night to visit the other sights of the city on the Danube!

Day 8 - Departure

End of the tour after breakfast you return to Passau by train or ship. The boat trip is an additional $25.
