AUSTRIA - Hiking Along Water   Following Riverbanks and Lakeshores

Waterfalls, Rushing Mountain Rivers, Lakes and Salt Mines

The villages Bad Goisern, Hallstatt, Obertraun and Gosau  are part of the scenic, attractive  and historical region “Salzkammergut”. For thousands of years, the water of the Dachstein glacier paved its way through wild mountain landscape and formed mysterious slopes, glassy lakes and sough streams. Marvellous hiking paths along the lonesome river courses and on the peaceful shores of the lake.

ITINERARY:

Day 1 - Arrival in Bad Goisern

Individual arrival, check-in and hand out of the travel documents

Day 2 - Hiking tour around the Gosausee (about 4 hours/11kms/7mi)

By car you drive to Gosau, were the marvellous hiking tour around the Gosausee starts. When you reach the end of the “Vorderer Gosausee” you have the possibility to keep on walking, to the “Hinteren Gosausee”, which is a small, hidden lake.

Day 3 - Hiking tour to “Corinsky Klause” in Bad Goisern (about 3 hours/10kms/6.2mi)

 The walk leads you, from the beginning of the Weissenbachtal along the stream Dürren to the Chorinsky Klause. The pent up water was used once to carry the wood, which was cutted in this area, down into the valley. Further to the Weissenbach Alm and back on the Bärenpfad.

Day 4 - Waldbachstrub-round track in Hallstatt (about 3 hours/4kms/2.5mi)

Beginning at Hallstatt the way leeds to a romantic round track in the „Echerntal“ valley. On the so called „Mahlersteig“, along sough streams, you reach the impressive „Waldbachstrub“ waterfalls same way back.

Day 5 - Free day

Use the day for a visit at Bad Ischl, the former summer residence at the emperor, or make a trip to the Mozart City Salzburg.

Day 6 - Hiking around the Hallstättersee (about 7 ½ hours/22kms/14mi)

From the village Steeg you follow the „Hallstättersee-Ostufer-hiking path“, which runs directly along the lake shore. This hiking path is marked as botanical walk, which leads you over an impressive suspension bridge and a rock galerie to Obertraun, an further on to Hallstatt.

A dashing rise leads you from the centre of Hallstatt to the salt mine. If case you don't want to walk up, you can use the funicular. You walk 200 m above the Hallstättersee along the path. You will definitely enjoy this great view over the mountain scenery.

You walk back to Steeg on a path, which is marked as “Soleweg”. The signs are giving you more information about the salt mining and its history..

Day 7 - Koppental hiking path from Bad Aussee to Obertraun (3 hours/10kms/6.2mi)

Today you take the train to Bad Aussee. A romantic hiking path, which starts at the station, leads you directly to the wild waters of the river Traun and through the unspoiled nature of this valley. Staying on this way you come along the famous sight, the “Koppenbrüller cave” with the sough “Wild stream Brüller”. A side trip to the nature reserve Koppenwinkel with the romantic “Koppenwinkelsee” is worthwhile. Follow the Obertrauner Höhen path to the train station. From there you go by train back to Bad Goisern.

Day 8 - Departure Day.

Go home or to some other wonderful spot in the world
